Overpowered PTR Diablo 4 Build Breaks Damage Counting Mechanics

A Diablo 4 player discovered a bug that allowed their Barbarian to inflict such immense damage that the game began to display infinity symbols instead of numerical values.

As fans prepare for the upcoming Vessel of Hatred expansion next month, Blizzard has introduced the 2.0 Public Test Realm (PTR) to enable players to experience new features and changes.

Despite developers warning that the PTR would be “broken” —with Blizzard’s Global Community Development Director Adam Fletcher stating this beforehand—one player encountered something quite extraordinary during gameplay.

In a video shared by Rob2628 on his YouTube channel, it was revealed that players can deal so much damage that the game ceases to record the numbers accurately.

Rob noted that this astonishing feat was achieved using a spin-to-win Barbarian build, which he attributes to a Chinese player.

This build utilizes a new passive called Barbed Carapace, providing extra Thorns when attacking. Additionally, using a skill with Cooldown grants the Unhindered affix for 5 seconds, allowing players to deal all Thorns as Physical damage to nearby enemies during that duration.

The build also appears to synergize with Tough as Nails, especially if players have over 30 ranks. Furthermore, it requires high-quality gear that enhances Thorns and other benefits.

While dealing extreme damage in Diablo is not unprecedented, the remarkable aspect of this situation is that the game ultimately stops displaying numbers and resorts to showing an infinity symbol. In the chaotic gameplay, it becomes challenging to identify specific damage amounts or determine what exceeds the numerical threshold, but it certainly reaches up to 37 digits.

This is over one undecillion, which should provide ample power to tackle the most challenging Pit encounters.

Players can experiment with this build during the PTR’s active period, but it is likely this exploit will be corrected before the launch of Season 6.

Diablo 4’s 2.0 PTR is available until September 11, 2024, with Season 6 and Vessel of Hatred set to debut on October 8, 2024.
