<p>Overwatch 2 is soon set to reintroduce the much-loved 6v6 format with a series of experimental gameplay modes as the developers aim to shape the game’s direction.
Upon its launch, Overwatch 2 transitioned from a 6v6 configuration to a 5v5 setup, limiting teams to a single tank. This shift sparked considerable backlash from the community, who yearned for the more coordinated gameplay that characterized the original version.
Responding to fan feedback, the developers have announced that, shortly following the arrival of Season 14, players will be able to explore new modes designed to evaluate the feasibility of 6v6 in Overwatch 2.
In a blog post dated October 24, the developers unveiled that the initial test mode, slated for release a week after Season 14 kicks off, is tentatively named ‘Min 1, Max 3.’
This mode will introduce a variation of the open queue system, stipulating that teams must include at least one tank, DPS, or support hero, while capping the number of players in any single role at three. Participants will have the freedom to switch roles as long as they remain within the established limits.
“This setup offers a variety of combinations for players to try, which paves the way for diverse team makeup that we haven’t previously explored in Overwatch 2,” the developers noted.
Fans of Overwatch 2 are eagerly awaiting the return of 6v6 gameplay.
“In addition to experimenting with a structure that could serve as a balancing point between Role Queue and Open Queue, this will also provide insights into how Overwatch 2’s heroes, abilities, and updates perform in a 6v6 setting before we consider broader testing expansions.”
The second test is scheduled to take place midway through Season 14, featuring the classic 2-2-2 role-queue variant, but integrating elements from OW2 such as reduced crowd control.
Each of these modes will present its own balance adjustments and will appear in Unranked matches with unique modifications, including reductions to tank capabilities, which had received significant boosts in the sequel.
Innovative 5v5 Modes to Debut in Season 13
While the developers are keen to revive the 6v6 format, they continue to innovate within the 5v5 framework, unveiling new experimental modes for that structure as well.
One such mode, labeled “Limit 2,” will permit teams to deploy two tanks, albeit with a reduction in tank health to balance the gameplay.
Blizzard is actively exploring more options for 5v5 modes.
Additionally, a mid-season update for S13 will introduce a mode known as ‘Kingmaker.’ This will similarly limit roles to a maximum of two but will enhance the power of the lone tank, support, or DPS player.
Looking ahead, developers hinted that based on the outcomes of these tests, it might be possible for both 6v6 and 5v5 experiences to coexist within Overwatch 2.
“Is it feasible for both 5v5 and 6v6 to operate side-by-side in Overwatch 2? A few months ago, I would have said no. However, as we’ve contemplated the future of Overwatch 2 and the preferences of our players, we recognize that our audience may desire multiple gameplay experiences, and this is something we will consider in our future plans,” they stated.
The community’s reaction to these new modes remains to be seen, but for those players eager to see the return of 6v6 gameplay, their wishes are set to be fulfilled in just a few weeks.
