Overwatch 2 has introduced its latest tank hero, Hazard, in a special limited-time trial available this weekend. We had the opportunity to discuss his unique abilities and design philosophy with Lead Gameplay Designer Alec Dawson, who shed light on what sets Hazard apart in the ever-evolving roster of heroes.
Unique Mechanics and Versatile Combat
Hazard is equipped with an array of capabilities that not only enable him to inflict damage but also enhance his mobility across maps. Dawson emphasized the intricate balance woven into Hazard’s design, stating that the aim was to unify offensive and defensive strategies.
“Our primary objective with Hazard was to ensure that both his offense and defense worked in harmony. Many of his abilities are highly adaptable, allowing him to engage and disengage dynamically in combat,” Dawson explained.
Combat Abilities
His primary weapon, Bonespur, acts as a close-to-mid-range shotgun that shoots spikes, delivering substantial damage to opponents. Additionally, Hazard can reload and inflict more damage while simultaneously shielding himself with his ability known as Spike Guard.
However, caution is advised. As Dawson noted, “Though Hazard gains damage resistance when using Spike Guard, he’s susceptible to various debuffs, such as Anti-Nade. Heroes like Ana can effectively counter him if he fails to maneuver adeptly. Also, he should avoid prolonged engagements with other tanks, as formidable opponents like Mauga can challenge him effectively.”
Innovative Environment Control
Where Hazard’s design truly shines is with his ability, Jagged Wall. This skill allows him to launch a projectile that sticks to surfaces, creating opportunities for environmental kills by knocking enemies back. Notably, allies are safe from damage, although they may find themselves cornered by the wall.
“Hazard can disrupt enemy formations utilizing Jagged Wall, making it possible to eliminate isolated targets effectively,” asserted Dawson.
Mobility and Positioning Tactics
His passive ability, Vault, allows him to scale shorter walls, including those formed by his Jagged Wall, providing him with enhanced positioning capabilities. In addition, Hazard possesses a powerful leap ability, akin to Winston’s called Violent Leap, which facilitates a swift lunge forward to strike enemies.
“By combining Vault with Violent Leap, players can achieve remarkable mobility, allowing Hazard to navigate through complex terrains effectively,” Dawson elaborated.
To maximize Hazard’s potential, players must adeptly juggle his abilities while traversing the map. The synergy between abilities like Spike Guard and Bonespur pairs well with heroes such as Mei or Reaper, who can sustain themselves in combat.
Ultimate Ability and Strategic Insight
Hazard’s ultimate, also named Bonespur, unleashes a barrage of spikes that can immobilize enemies upon impact, leaving them vulnerable to subsequent attacks. However, the ability can penetrate terrain, making it difficult for enemies to find safe cover.
Insights on Development and Future Changes
During our discussion, Dawson revealed that the development of Hazard’s abilities underwent several iterations. “In the early stages, Hazard’s Jagged Wall was conceived as a barrier similar to Orisa’s previous shield. Although it included spikes for damage, its utility was challenging to convey effectively,” he noted.
Dawson continued, “Certain abilities, like Spike Guard, remained consistent, while others, such as Downpour and Jagged Wall, evolved considerably. One memory that stands out is experimenting with giant spikes as a form of disruption—think along the lines of an Orisa Spear designed to push enemies back, which only survived a couple of playtests.”
Upcoming Trials and 6v6 Gameplay
Hazard will also participate in the ongoing 6v6 mode tests within Season 14 of Overwatch 2. Dawson expressed optimism about Hazard’s integration into this game format: “With 6v6, Hazard can leverage his Spike Guard amidst larger enemy groups, and abilities like Downpour will shine in restricting multiple targets. We’re also considering health adjustments for Jagged Wall due to increased damage flow in 6v6 matches.”
Players can experience Hazard during this limited preview event until November 25. He is set to be available in full capacity when Season 14 launches on December 10.
