During a recent interview, Overwatch 2’s Lead Hero Designer Alec Dawson stated that Blizzard is open to incorporating abilities from Mirrorwatch and April Fool’s into the main game.
During a Reddit AMA with the Overwatch 2 Hero design team, a player inquired if they were secretly testing any upcoming heroes with the reimagined abilities of Mirrorwatch. The community was given the opportunity to ask questions during the AMA.
Despite not conducting any secret testing, Dawson assured that the team is still considering adding some of Mirrorwatch’s and April Fool’s altered abilities to the base game.
“We do not conduct any secret testing of upcoming features in the near future. However, we do observe how certain changes perform when they are fully implemented and have been tested extensively in various games,”Dawson explained.
The lead designer for Overwatch 2’s heroes also mentioned that they have conducted internal testing on Reinhardt’s new passive ability in Mirrorwatch, Frenzy. This ability increases his attack speed when using his Rocket Hammer to deal damage. However, they encountered difficulties in implementing it in the original game.
He also expressed interest in seeing Bastion’s reimagined ultimate from Mirrorwatch, in which four slicers were released from the sky instead of artillery shells. However, he feared that it would be too noisy.
“According to Dawson, the game modes Mirrorwatch and April Fool’s, which are filled with wacky ideas, provide insight into what excites players. He also mentioned that some of these ideas could potentially be implemented in the game in the future.”
During Season 10, players were able to experience the limited-time game mode Mirrorwatch, which featured a unique twist on the Talon and Overwatch agents. In this mode, their roles were reversed and they were given reimagined abilities that greatly altered their gameplay to better suit their new narrative.
The April Fool’s game mode, while still maintaining its playful nature, takes a more serious approach by altering Hero’s abilities to suit a specific storyline, rather than for comedic purposes.
