Overwatch 2 Developers to Conduct Further Role Experiments with Introduction of 6v6 Mode

The developers of Overwatch 2 have mentioned a new format they plan to try out, in which a player will receive a specific “bonus.”

In their July 25 developer blog, Overwatch 2 discussed the 6v6 format and elaborated on their decision to shift to 5v5. They also shared their plans to experiment with various 6v6 options in-game to evaluate the outcomes.

Despite the difficulties that come with 6v6, they aimed to prioritize creating the best possible experience for 5v5 while still being receptive to feedback from players.

As a result, they are exploring the possibility of hosting a series of events in Overwatch 2 to test out various team compositions. Although the blog did not mention it explicitly, a recent interview with Overwatch 2 streamers Flats and SVB (available at https://x.com/OWCavalry/status/1819509701039755662) shed more light on what players can anticipate – a trial of a two-player per role setup in a 5v5 format.

In a 5v5 setting, this allows a team to have a composition of two tanks, two DPS, and one support. They also have the option to have one tank, two DPS, and two supports. However, one team member will always have the solo role – with one caveat.

During a discussion about the hybrid open queue system for Overwatch 2, Lead Hero Designer Alec Dawson revealed that he had been trying out a “format in which the solo player receives a bonus of some kind.”

The speaker asked if a player is assigned as the solo tank in a 1-2-2 composition in an open queue format, it can be challenging as they are essentially playing as two tanks. The speaker also questioned if the solo support in a 2-2-1 team, who is responsible for all the healing, requires any additional help.

Although the specific nature of this “bonus”was not stated, it can be assumed that it will most likely benefit the player with the solo role.

It has been announced that a new Quick Play Hacked mode will be released for Season 13. It will be intriguing to witness the impact this change will have on the game.
