Overwatch 2 Introduces Game-Changing ‘Counter-Swap’ Feature in Season 13

Overwatch 2 distinguishes itself as a competitive title, particularly due to the option to change heroes mid-match. This dynamic often resembles a game of rock-paper-scissors, especially for tank players.

For quite some time, the community has voiced its concerns about counter-swapping and the lack of enjoyment it brings. In response, the developers have announced a significant change for the upcoming season, as detailed in their patch notes for Season 13.

Beginning with the next season, when players switch their hero, their selection will not be visible to the opposing team on the scoreboard for a duration of 15 seconds.

The developers have explained that this adjustment is meant to “introduce more friction to counter-swapping,” which is particularly relevant in “extreme situations.” This includes instances where players from opposing sides monitor their scoreboards and continuously switch heroes within their respawn to counter each other.

In terms of community feedback, many players have expressed dissatisfaction with this change, as it does not effectively address the underlying issue of counter-swapping. Experienced players are often aware that if they perform well, the enemy will promptly switch heroes to counter them. Moreover, they can usually anticipate which heroes will be swapped in response.

One player remarked, “This is pointless, we’ve been stuck in this loop of rock-paper-scissors for so long that you can accurately guess what the enemy will choose to counter your tank pick,” in response to an X post about the update.

Another chimed in, “If I play Winston, I can’t help but wonder how the other tank will react to that one. The moment I switch to Zarya, it’s practically guaranteed that Rein will be on the opposing team in no time.”

Some players opined that this new mechanic would merely favor the first player to counter-swap, creating a disadvantage for those who switch later. One user stated, “The first life following a counter-swap offers free kills/value unless you can predict their switch.”

Conversely, there are players advocating for an even longer delay than 15 seconds to create a more significant impact. Regardless, the arrival of Season 13 is imminent, bringing with it a plethora of new features that players can eagerly anticipate.
