Overwatch 2 Job Post Reveals Potential Major Changes to Competitive and Ranked Gameplay

Exciting news for Overwatch 2 fans: a recent job posting suggests that a significant update focused on esports and competitive gameplay is currently in the works.

As Overwatch 2 celebrates its second anniversary, it has faced its share of controversies, including the transition to a 5v5 format, the discontinuation of its PvE storyline, and the implementation of monetization strategies. However, the game’s dedicated community remains strong.

On October 9, an interesting job listing for a “Product Marketing Consultant” appeared on Blizzard’s career page, indicating the development of a “major feature.”

Job openings often hint at future developments, and the search for a candidate specifically to promote this upcoming feature suggests it is something substantial.

The job listing specifies that the role will involve “planning and managing multi-channel marketing campaigns” to generate excitement and engagement around the new feature, as well as “collaborating closely with brand, social, product, development, community, and esports teams to ensure a smooth execution of the launch plan.”

The mention of esports teams certainly attracts attention. Game Director Aaron Keller has previously hinted at a potential tournament mode that could be introduced in future updates.

Before the trial for a 5-player team queue took place in 2023, Keller suggested that such a mode “could create opportunities for various types of team-based competitions” and specifically highlighted tournaments as a potential addition.

While these competitive features are likely not aimed at casual gamers, the job description indicates a focus on high-level players: “Segment market and identify target audiences that the new feature can appeal to. Develop compelling messaging and positioning for the new feature to resonate with those audiences.”

Though we’ll have to wait for further details, it’s evident that Blizzard is gearing up to invest significant resources into this upcoming Overwatch 2 feature.
