An Overwatch 2 player has astonishingly risen to ranks one and two on the European leaderboards by exclusively playing Junkrat, a hero often overlooked in high-level play.
Swedish DPS player Gurkmeister has emerged as a standout performer in the game, leaving many in the OW2 community astonished.
While it’s common to see Junkrat players dominate lower-ranked lobbies with his spammable attacks, he is rarely featured in competitive play due to his significant weaknesses.
The character struggles with limited range, relatively slow projectiles, and a moderately sized hitbox, which makes him vulnerable to well-coordinated attacks.
However, Junkrat possesses notable strengths, including high damage output, mobility via mines, and decent one-on-one capabilities if players can accurately land their shots.
Gurkmeister has achieved rank 1 and 2 using only Junkrat.
On September 25, Twitch streamer Gurk shared a screenshot of the Top 500 rankings, proudly displaying that he had reached the top two spots purely through his Junkrat gameplay.
In contrast, other players in the top ten utilized meta-dominant heroes like Tracer, Widowmaker, and Ashe, making Gurkmeister’s success with Junkrat even more remarkable.
Many users on social media were astounded by his achievement. “I’m so impressed by how he’s holding #1 for so long,”one user remarked.
“I can’t believe this guy is just gurking all over the EU ladder, and even the so-called ‘pro Overwatch players’ can’t do anything about it. Gurkmeister is my GOAT for real,” another user praised.
“He’s single-handedly proving that Junkrat is meta,”commented yet another player.
For his part, Gurkmeister will be competing at the professional level for Stage 4 of the OWCS, representing French team ‘Wasp X Ohhhh No’ after finishing first in the FACEIT League Season 2 Expert Tier.
It remains to be seen whether he can maintain his leaderboard position until the end of the season, but for fans of unorthodox heroes, Gurkmeister might just become a new favorite to watch on Twitch.
