Overwatch 2 players can’t get enough of Mei’s “aggressive” prototype hero design

Fans of Overwatch 2 have been captivated by a preliminary concept for Mei that gives her a more intimidating and rebellious look.

Mei was among the initial batch of new characters to be added to the original Overwatch lineup in November 2015. Like the other members of the cast, Blizzard put a lot of thought and effort into Mei’s design and abilities before she was introduced as a DPS character. However, her appearance and abilities have since undergone significant changes from her original concept, as seen in Overwatch 2.

Initially, Mei was portrayed as a serious figure – a Canadian bounty hunter who would freeze her targets. However, the Overwatch team decided to change direction and eventually added a more lighthearted character to the roster.

The original concept for Mei, which included a freeze gun and ice pick, has resurfaced on the Overwatch 2 subreddit, and fans can’t seem to get enough of her original design.

The post showcases an image from The Art of Overwatch Art Book, accompanied by a brief description of the design.

According to the statement, the designers were initially enthusiastic about the earliest idea of Mei, but eventually decided that the character was too intimidating.

The old design was likened to The Skull Merchant from Dead by Daylight and a blood elf by the players.

According to one user, the familiar cute and friendly Mei has been transformed into a more aggressive design. This change in vibe is quite distinct, but the user admits to actually loving it.

Another popular response stated that Mei’s original design had a somewhat chilly feel to it.

Despite being enamored with her previous appearance, players have expressed their satisfaction with Mei’s current, more gentle design and are pleased with her appearance in Overwatch 2.
