Overwatch 2 Players Debate Controversial First-Of-Its-Kind Cosmetic & Its Missing Detail

The recent release of the first-ever Mythic-tier weapon skin for Reinhardt in Overwatch 2 has caused division among the community, as some feel that it lacks certain visual elements.

As of its two-year anniversary, Overwatch 2 has finally introduced its first Mythic tier weapon skin. The Bound Demon Reinhardt skin was revealed on July 23 and immediately made available in the game.

The cosmetic in OW2 is the first of its kind and follows a similar pattern to cosmetics found in other Activision Blizzard games, such as Call of Duty. It features four distinct levels that progress as you play, adapting to your eliminations and offering exclusive kill effects as you improve.

Upon initial spawning, the weapon will have its default appearance. After achieving five eliminations, the weapon will start to emit a glowing aura as the flames intensify. Upon reaching 10 eliminations, the weapon will emit a vibrant yellow light, signifying that the flames have fully engulfed its design.

Despite initial praise from some players who hailed it as “one of the top weapons in the game,”the conversation soon shifted as backlash emerged. Many pointed out its steep price of 80 Mythic Prisms, which translates to $70-$80 USD depending on the purchased bundles, as it is not possible to buy the exact amount needed.

Despite some criticism focused on the perceived lack of visual flair, it should be noted that the evolving skin details in Overwatch 2 are a new level of pizzazz that have not been seen before. However, according to early testing, it appears that others in the lobby may not be able to see the evolving weapon skin effects. This has been pointed out as a disappointment by some.

As you accumulate eliminations and notice your weapon heating up on your screen, others will not be able to witness your impressive streak. This may be a deliberate design decision, as some players have suggested that it is a means of preventing additional visual confusion in a game that is already visually busy.

Despite the expensive price of the cosmetic, many players have expressed a desire for it to be available as an option. One player even suggested, “I wish there was a toggle for this. It would be cool to see skin effects on both enemies and teammates during fights.”

It should be noted that there has been an inconsistency with several of Overwatch 2’s high-tier cosmetics. While some Mythics feature special visual and sound effects that are visible and audible to others in the match, others do not. In the case of Reinhardt’s new weapon, it seems to fall into the latter category, causing a divide among the community.
