The developers of Overwatch 2 have disclosed on social media that they have faced harassment in the wake of the recent controversy surrounding the selection of heroes for Mythic skins, and players are denouncing this behavior.
Blizzard announced a variety of fresh content for Season 12 on August 14, which included a Mythic skin for Reaper. Despite this, many players were disappointed with the developer’s decision for the rare skin and instead voiced their desire for Mythic cosmetics for other heroes like Ramattra.
The dispute escalated when OW2 Game Director Aaron Keller announced that Venture, a hero currently lacking in cosmetics, would not be receiving a new skin until at least late 2024.
Certain players were extremely outraged by the absence of Mythics for their preferred heroes, to the point where they directed their anger towards the game’s developers.
According to Overwatch Mythic producer cappugccino, creating a mythic requires the efforts of an entire team. While I am very proud of our work on Anubis Reaper, I have made the decision not to share the development roster. Sadly, some of our team members have already faced targeted harassment, and I do not wish to encourage any more of it by making the roster public. This was stated by cappugccino on social media.
Reaper Anubis Mythic was introduced for Season 12 of Overwatch 2.
In response to the accusations of harassment by the developers, Overwatch players took to Reddit to call out those who participated in the inappropriate behavior.
One user reminded others to consider the people behind the game, emphasizing that it is not just a product released by big companies like EA or 2K on an annual basis. Instead, it is a smaller team with limited resources. Despite the mistakes made by the developers, the user urged others to acknowledge their efforts and not be too harsh.
Additionally, a player noted that Season 12 included a substantial amount of content beyond just skins. This included the introduction of a new hero, Juno, a new game mode, and two new maps.
“It’s important for people to show sympathy, as the recent lay-offs at Microsoft and Activision Blizzard will inevitably affect the game’s content pipeline for some time,”the player stated.
Despite Season 12 having a mixed reception for the start of the new content cycle, it appears that Overwatch players are still finding enjoyment in the new season.
Despite receiving support from some players, the developers may still be anticipating potential issues that could cause backlash from the player base in regards to Season 13.
