Players of Overwatch 2 have expressed their dissatisfaction with the developers for promoting recolored skins in a way that they feel is deceptive and unethical.
OW2 players have expressed their frustrations regarding the emergence of microtransactions and changes to the in-game store, particularly when it comes to cosmetic items. These aspects have been points of contention among fans, who have consistently voiced their concerns.
Despite being a popular feature, the in-game store has caused significant frustration among players. Recently, players have criticized the developers for supposedly “misleading”fans with new skin packs that are essentially just repurposed versions of existing cosmetics that were already available.
Im fine with recolours as i dont buy them, but locking off the original so you cant see it without filters is super misleading and locking it from purchase is scummy byu/joenuts4 inOverwatch
The author of the Reddit post addressing the issue expressed, “I have no issue with recolors since I do not purchase them, but it is deceptive and unethical to hide the original and make it unattainable without filters.”
Similarly frustrated messages filled the comments section of the thread as other Overwatch 2 players chimed in with their own thoughts on the matter.
One user on Reddit expressed their opinion by stating, “It seems like they have no intention of providing free-to-play players with anything enjoyable. They seem to believe that their subpar gameplay is sufficient in keeping players interested.”
In addition, someone stated, “To be honest, no matter how much people try to defend Blizzard’s questionable business practices, I will never understand why they continue to use such disrespectful and illogical marketing strategies. It’s all driven by greed, and they are fully aware that players are willing to comply.”
One player in the Overwatch 2 community even criticized the developers for promoting recolored skins, calling it a “d*ck move”.
This is not the first instance in which the OW developers have faced criticism for recycling old skin designs and marketing them as brand new items in the store.
During the 2023 Christmas event, players of Overwatch 2 expressed their disappointment with Blizzard’s “lazy reskin”of Pharah’s new Christmas cosmetic, noting that it bore a striking resemblance to an old Halloween design.
Despite the modifications made by the developers to the cost of skins in the in-game store in June 2024, the community is still advocating for additional adjustments to be made to the cosmetics.
