Overwatch Classic Events: OW2 Developers Hint at Return of “Terrifying” Metas

Overwatch Classic Event Sparks Nostalgia and Future Meta Exploration

Blizzard Entertainment recently introduced Overwatch Classic, a new event in Overwatch 2 that transports players back to the game’s original 2016 launch experience. This limited-time mode draws inspiration from the successful Fortnite Season OG, allowing players to enjoy key elements of the game as they were at launch.

What to Expect in Overwatch Classic

The Overwatch Classic mode reintroduces several features from the game’s early days, such as:

  • 6v6 Player Format: The match format returns to its original state.
  • Removed Role and Hero Limits: Players can select heroes without the constraints imposed in more recent updates.
  • Unbalanced Abilities: Players will encounter heroes with abilities that have not yet undergone the balancing refinements implemented over the last eight years.

Looking to the Future: Meta Revisions

During recent discussions, Alec Dawson, a key developer, hinted at the potential for more nostalgic blasts from the past. “We’ve already talked about what this could be as a recurring thing,” he shared. The idea of revisiting different periods in the game’s history is under consideration, as he acknowledged, “Overwatch has a lot of history and a lot of different metas players might want to return to.”

Nostalgia vs. Active Engagement

As Blizzard gauges player reactions to the Overwatch Classic event, the company aims to determine if nostalgia can translate into ongoing engagement. “This is a snapshot of when the game first came out,” Dawson emphasized, noting the importance of understanding whether players desire to regularly experience this mode or if it merely serves as a temporary nostalgic escape.

What Past Metas Could Return?

Since the game’s inception, Overwatch has experienced a myriad of metas, from the iconic ‘Nanoblade’ era featuring Ana and Genji to the reign of the double sniper duo, Widowmaker and Hanzo. Although details remain sparse regarding which past meta will be revisited next, Dawson indicated intrigue surrounding the ‘Moth’ meta from 2017. This period saw Mercy capable of resurrecting all fallen teammates with her Ultimate ability.

“If we were to do another one after this, maybe we’d be looking at a meta where Mercy was really dominant,”Dawson remarked, hinting at the exciting possibilities that lie ahead for veteran players.

Event Duration and Future Plans

The inaugural Overwatch Classic event is set to run until December 2. Players and fans alike are left wondering whether Blizzard will choose to bring this fan-favorite mode back in Season 14 or in upcoming events.
