Paladin Oaths Continue to be Broken by Baldur’s Gate 3 Players

Baldur’s Gate 3 provides numerous options for players to experience the game, including the challenging Paladin class. This class has proven to be particularly demanding, leading many players to struggle with upholding their Oaths.

On Reddit, a player shared how they unintentionally broke their Oath by choosing to side with Lae’zel and battle the Tieflings during her recruitment portion in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Shortly after the game began, numerous individuals wasted no time in sharing their own tales of misfortune, including some who had broken their Paladin Oaths within the first hour. One player recounted, “No matter how evil the character may be, the game doesn’t discriminate; breaking the Oath still occurs. Even killing Kagha, who is aligned with Shadow Druids and has no qualms about killing children for theft, can result in breaking the Oath.”

“The trick is to provoke them into attacking you through dialogue or by having another party member initiate the fight. In that case, it would be considered ‘self-defense’ even if you purposely instigated the altercation.”

Another person also shared, “I encountered the glitch after defeating Cazador while upholding my Oath of Ancients. Releasing the spawn into the Underdark caused the glitch, which was completely unexpected and caught me off guard. To my surprise, the glitch reappeared while I was battling Bhaal cultists. The flaming fist joined in and I accidentally triggered the glitch once more while defending myself and defeating them.”

One person shared their friend’s experience with playing a Paladin in BG3. They introduced their friend to the game and he immediately chose to play as a Paladin. However, he was distressed when he found out that he had broken his Oath by attempting to kill the Tieflings who had captured Lae’zel. Another friend also struggled with keeping their Oath, as they accidentally killed half of the grove.

It should be noted that Baldur’s Gate 3 has a stricter approach to handling Paladin Oaths compared to tabletop D&D. In contrast, the Vengeance option is more lenient and even promotes a player towards darker paths, which is important to keep in mind when choosing the class for the first time.
