Palworld developer discusses low player count and game’s future

A Palworld developer clarified that Pocketpair is not concerned about being referred to as a “dead game,”stating that it can actually be beneficial for all parties involved due to the current low number of players.

The moment Palworld launched on the internet, it immediately gained popularity thanks to its one-of-a-kind gameplay and adorable creatures reminiscent of Pokemon. It quickly surpassed player count records and became a cultural phenomenon.

Despite being released only six months ago, the number of players for Palworld has significantly declined. According to Steamdb, the game currently has 23,800 concurrent players, a huge difference from its impressive peak of 2.1 million concurrents. While some may label it as a “dead game,”Pocketpair remains unconcerned.

In a discussion with Going Indie on YouTube, Palworld Community Manager John “Bucky” Buckley clarifies that it should not be viewed as a negative.

Bucky clarified their stance on fans not playing Palworld, stating that they do not see it as an issue and even encourage them to explore other games.

“I believe it is not beneficial to anyone to compel gamers to play the same game every single day.”

Some games, like League of Legends and Dota 2, are intentionally designed for constant play, but there seems to be a growing number of games that are not meant to be played for extended periods of time. Despite this, developers still encourage players to make these games their primary focus.

Palworld’s player count is at an all-time low, but that’s of no concern to the devs.

“Bucky expressed concern that constantly playing the same game may not be beneficial for anyone involved in the gaming industry. From the gamers and developers to the media, this repetitive cycle may have negative effects on the industry as a whole.”

Bucky contended that an increase in the amount of time spent on live service games will only lead to big developers prioritizing “soulless”short-lived live service games.
