A data miner has uncovered evidence of 4K video compatibility in the code for the upcoming Nintendo Switch remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Despite being in its seventh year since its release, the Nintendo Switch continues to thrive and remains a popular console. Despite rumors of the upcoming release of the Switch 2, the current Switch is still receiving highly anticipated games, such as the remake of the beloved GameCube title, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Despite the upgraded visuals in the Switch remake, the game’s code also contains mentions of 4K resolutions.
RibShark, a data miner, posted a screenshot of the game code for the upcoming GameCube remake on X/Twitter. According to RibShark, the code for Paper Mario TTYD includes a mention of 4K resolutions, which is not currently supported by the Nintendo Switch.
There seems to be code for handling 4K resolutions in the new Paper Mario TTYD remake. No idea if this is normal for Switch games or not but I thought it was interesting. pic.twitter.com/dVYnXsRUUx

Currently, the Nintendo Switch is unable to achieve 4K resolutions without the use of a third-party upscaler between the console and the TV. The maximum video output supported by the Switch is 1080p, including the recently released OLED model.
Although there have been rumors about the Switch 2, it has been speculated that the upcoming console may have the ability to display resolutions in 4K. Leaked information from Modapad, a Switch accessory manufacturer, suggests that the dock for the future console will be able to output video in 4K. Additionally, there are talks of the console potentially utilizing Nvidia’s DLSS technology, further hinting at its potential for 4K capabilities.
Although Paper Mario TTYD was released for the current Switch, Modapad has confirmed that its predecessor will also be compatible with current Switch cartridges. This discovery suggests that the game may also be compatible with the upcoming Switch 2.
Currently, Nintendo has officially announced that the successor to the Switch is in development. However, it is still unknown if the upcoming console will include 4K capabilities and if it will be able to play games from previous systems such as Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
