Payday 3: Offline Mode Requires Online Connection

The highly-anticipated offline mode for Payday 3 has been implemented, however, it still inexplicably requires players to be connected to the servers and online.

When Payday 3 was released in 2023, numerous players who had moved on from Payday 2 expressed disappointment over the absence of an offline mode for solo play. Unlike its predecessors, the sequel was created as an online-only game.

Starbreeze Entertainment, in their announcement of Operation Medic Bag in February 2024, stated that they would be introducing an offline solo mode as part of the initiative to combat player frustrations and declining player numbers.

In June 2024, Starbreeze announced that the highly anticipated Solo mode will finally be released. However, to the disappointment of the community, it has been revealed that players will still need to be connected to the internet to access it.

Recently announced in a developer update, the developers provided details about their implementation of a “solo mode beta”to allow players to try things out ahead of time.

Although, it is necessary to remain online and connected to their servers while doing so. Developers have previously stated that players must be connected to the game’s servers in order for their progression to be accurately tracked.

Despite not being fully finalized, the solo mode beta is still in development. According to Amir Listo, global brand director and head of community for Payday, the feature is not yet a complete representation of their vision. It is currently being released as a beta version to assess its performance.

“He continued, stating that the performance is expected to be impacted as the parts that are typically frontloaded by our servers will now need to be executed on your own hardware.”

“You will still need to begin the game in solo mode while connected to the internet, a feature that we plan to enhance in the future.”

Following its release, Payday 3 was deemed a disaster for Starbreeze, leading to its CEO offering apologies to players and eventually departing the studio in early 2024.

Currently, Payday 3’s player count on Steam continues to decrease. In May 2024, there was an average of 333 players and a peak of 1,641. This is significantly lower than the current player count of Payday 2, which currently has 12,941 players online.
