PC builder makes custom water-cooled PS5 & we’re obsessed

PidgyPCs, a custom PC building company, invested $2,500 in crafting their own ultimate PS5, opting for a water-cooling system over the noisy fans.

Like the infamous console wars, the ongoing debate between consoles and gaming PCs shows no signs of stopping. This is especially true as consoles like the PlayStation 5 adopt a similar architecture to that of a typical gaming PC. While opinions may differ, it is widely accepted that PCs have the upper hand in terms of customization options.

The PS5 offers some customization options, such as replacing its console covers and increasing the storage capacity with a larger SSD for downloading additional games. However, it still has more limited capabilities when compared to a gaming PC.

Despite the common belief, it has been demonstrated by PC Builder and YouTuber PidgyPCs that with some knowledge and a significant budget, one can successfully incorporate a staple of PC builds, water cooling, into a customized PS5.

In their recent YouTube video, PidgyPCs showcased the impressive process of adding water-cooling to a PS5. The project, which cost $2,500, was comparable to building a high-powered gaming PC. However, the main motivation for PidgyPC was the enjoyment of creating a unique custom PS5. The project began with the purchase of a disc-based God Of War Ragnarok Edition PS5 and the installation of a Nextorage 4TB M.2 SSD, as shown in the video. PidgyPC also had to format the SSD beforehand because water-blocking the PS5 would result in losing access to the eject and power buttons, as well as making it more difficult to access the SSD.

After setting up the PS5 and formatting the SSD, the central aspect of this project could commence. The PS5’s internal components were carefully disassembled, including the main board and heat sink. These components were then transferred to an EK-QuantumX CoolingStation Monoblock, designed specifically for the PS5, and finally placed into a customized Corsair 2500x PC case.

To complete the project, the case was equipped with Thermaltake SWAFAN EX14 ARGB fans and an EK Quantum Surface 280mm radiator for improved airflow. Additionally, an EK Quantum Kinetic 240mm DDC pump and an Asus ROG Strix 850w power supply were added. To enhance the aesthetic, the modified PS5 was filled with EK Navy Blue coolant for a cool and sleek appearance.

Without a temperature probe being used in the project, it was not possible to record the temperatures of the PS5 device. However, PidgyPC mentioned in a post on r/PCMods (link provided) that the coolant temperatures remained at a steady 35 degrees Celsius after an hour of playing Marvel’s Spider-Man. This water cooling modification resulted in the PS5 being completely silent, a welcome difference from its reputation for having a loud fan noise.
