Pixar has stated that it will only release future movies on Disney Plus if certain conditions are met, ensuring that it will not drop any more films on the streaming service.
Despite a strong start with highly acclaimed films like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles, Pixar has faced challenges over the past five years, resulting in a change in their success.
Due to the worldwide shutdown, Disney Plus premiered Soul, Luca, and Turning Red. Although they were highly successful and attracted large audiences, their early release also made it increasingly common for viewers to watch Pixar movies at home rather than in theaters.
Despite their wildly successful predecessors, both Lightyear and Elemental were considered box office failures for the studio’s next theatrical releases, due to the knock-on effect.
This has resulted in a significant statement from Pixar President Jim Morris. In a comprehensive conversation with Bloomberg, Morris expressed: “I am hopeful that we will not debut another full-length film on Disney+.
“Producing a series for Disney+ would be the best approach if we decide to pursue additional projects for the platform. This clear separation would distinguish our work for theaters from our work for streaming.”
Currently, two Pixar shows are on their way to the streamer. Win or Lose, centered around a middle school softball team, is scheduled to premiere later this year. Additionally, Dream Productions, set in the universe of Riley’s dreams from Inside Out, is expected to be released on Disney Plus in 2025.
As of now, audiences can anticipate the worldwide release of Inside Out 2 on June 14, 2024. Additionally, there are several other highly-anticipated movies premiering next month, along with some of the best films released this year.
