Pixelborn Shutdown

Pixelborn Shutdown

The TCG community has been shaken by the news of the impending shutdown of Pixelborn, the unofficial online client for Disney Lorcana’s premiere game. There is a divide among fans as to how this will affect the game.

Despite being a newcomer to the wider TCG scene, Disney Lorcana has been gaining immense popularity and becoming more widely available in recent months. Its gameplay is well-crafted and its use of beloved IPs makes it a likely candidate for success.

During the early stages of the game’s development, Pixelborn was created as a fan-made online client that closely mimicked Disney Lorcana’s tabletop gameplay. Due to its accuracy, we deemed it one of the top methods for playing Disney Lorcana on the internet.

The problem lies therein. The online client’s near-perfect emulation of the TCG meant that its days were numbered from the start. Pixelborn’s creator recently announced the shutdown of the service, following the request of Disney. As a result, the Lorcana community is currently mourning the impending loss of the online client.

Pixelborn simulated the Disney Lorcana tabletop experience with tremendous accuracy.

Pixelborn, which is a complete version of Disney Lorcana, was created by just one Lorcana enthusiast, Pavel Kolev. Thanks to the support of its Patreon subscribers, the game is available to play for free on the internet and covers the expenses of server maintenance and development.

Kolev personally chose to donate any extra money to charitable organizations like Save the Children and Doctors Without Borders. In certain cases, donations exceeding $5,000 were given.

Regrettably, Pixelborn not only successfully replicated Disney Lorcana’s gameplay, but it also contained a comprehensive collection of the game’s cards with their corresponding artwork. The program’s website provided instructional materials on how to upload the images, along with zip files containing every card and its Enchanted variations.

As a result, Disney decided to request a shutdown of the service in order to safeguard their intellectual property. Kolev then announced his decision to comply on the Pixelborn Discord Server and also shared the message through a post on X.

Despite the fact that the decision had “shattered their heart to pieces,”Kolev acknowledged and maintained that the service would still be terminated. “I have always promised to honor such a request, and I intend to follow through with my word and will not rely on technicalities. Pixelborn will cease support for Lorcana by June 16th, 2024,”Kolev promised.

The announcement has caused divisions within the Disney Lorcana community as players try to understand the implications of losing Pixelborn. The program has significantly influenced the TCG’s competitive scene and global economy, with numerous competitive decks used in official competitions originating from it.

As the Pixelborn meta proved successful, card costs fluctuated accordingly. This provided players with a valuable means of testing and preparing for tournament play. Additionally, for individuals living in remote areas or lacking access to local scenes, it became a convenient way to participate in the world of Disney Lorcana.

Despite differing opinions within the player community, there are some who believe the Pixelborn shutdown will have no effect on the game’s overall health, while others fear it may lead to an early downfall for Disney Lorcana.

Some content creators, who relied on Pixelborn as a convenient way to stream Lorcana, are losing a valuable resource. However, not all of them believe that the game will come to an end without Pixelborn.

For quite some time, Speci Lorcana has been a well-known Disney Lorcana content creator on YouTube. He has been an integral part of the game’s online community, with his main focus being on deck building and competitive play. Due to his extensive knowledge and skills, he was selected to be a commentator for one of the inaugural Disney Lorcana Challenge tournaments in Lille, France.

Although there is uncertainty surrounding the TCG after the Pixelborn shutdown, Speci remains hopeful about the game’s current state. He is fully aware of the significance of Pixelborn to Disney Lorcana’s overall success.

“Speci acknowledged in a video discussing the shutdown that Pixelborn has significantly contributed to the game’s success. Without Pixelborn, the game would not have gained its current level of popularity. In fact, many players have been drawn to the game solely because of the chance to play on Pixelborn.”

The main focus of his acknowledgement was the platform’s contribution in serving as a strong free marketing tool for the TCG. He recognized how Pixelborn has given numerous streamers the chance to effortlessly share Disney Lorcana content, which can be challenging to produce for. However, the high cost of equipment, the need for physical space to play, and the requirement for physical products may create a potential gap in this aspect.

Despite taking those factors into account, Speci remains hesitant to completely give up on Disney Lorcana. This is due to the success of an event where more than 2,000 players gathered to participate in the game, making it clear why Speci holds onto hope.

“He expressed confidence that Disney Lorcana will continue to thrive, especially if Disney and Ravensburger take advantage of the demand for an official digital platform.”

“Speci suggested that an official Lorcana client would be just as popular as Pixelborn, which they had previously seen to be highly favored. However, he noted that Lorcana would have to put in a lot of effort to match the capabilities of Pixelborn. He also praised the exceptional quality of the Pixelborn client.”

Despite being a member of the Disney Lorcana community, he recognized Disney’s authority to safeguard their intellectual property, even if it meant losing a beloved aspect of the community. He fully supported Pavel’s choice to shut it down, as he was obligated to do so by outside entities.

Inktable.net is another popular online client for Disney Lorcana that may not be long for this world.

Disney may have shut down Pixelborn due to their desire to protect their copyright, but this decision has raised the question of why they chose to do so now. After all, the game had been allowed to run for over 12 months before they put an end to it.

With Disney Lorcana now being sold in multiple countries and with increased availability of each set, the company may have deemed it an opportune moment to release the product. This has sparked hope among many that an official online platform may be in the works.

We have contacted Disney to seek clarification on the matter and will include their response in this article.
