Move over typical romantic dramas like Black Doves, Bridgerton, and Baby Reindeer (ish)—Netflix’s new film, Back in Action, takes a refreshing approach by sidestepping the conventional love narrative. Instead of weaving in romantic tension, this movie focuses on a committed couple aspiring to balance their thrilling pasts with family life.

In many action films, romantic involvement is almost a prerequisite, as seen with the iconic Bond girls in the James Bond franchise or the quirky pairings like Vanessa Barrington and Austin Powers. Yet, Back in Action breaks this mold, offering a narrative that is both unique and engaging.

The Intention Behind a Love-Free Plot

At the heart of the film, we encounter Matt (played by Jamie Foxx) and Emily (played by Cameron Diaz), who have been deeply in love for over 15 years. Their steadfast relationship allows the audience to immerse themselves in exhilarating action sequences instead of romantic drama. Director Seth Gordon underscores this focus:

“I wanted all the character and relationship jeopardy to be about their daughter. Both the kids are suspicious about their parents and think they’re phonies. They’re lying, full of sh*t, however you want to say it. Losing their trust, and in a way, losing them emotionally, was the real fear, and for any parent, you’ll know that’s real.”

The film’s plot revolves around Matt and Emily being thrust back into the dangerous world of the CIA after taking a hiatus to raise their family—while deceiving their children along the way. For Gordon, the focal point is the parent-child relationship, a dynamic that resonates powerfully with audiences.

“The kernel of the idea for the movie came from thinking about, ‘What if Jason Bourne had a kid? What would happen? Would he have to retire?’ And then I was riffing about that with Beau [Bauman], and I, to be honest, had had a few beers,” he shared. “Just out of nowhere, he’s like, ‘That’s a movie. And maybe it should be a couple.’ And then we were discussing Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Bond… what the shape of it could be.”

Back in Action is currently streaming on Netflix, offering viewers a unique cinematic experience devoid of common romantic tropes. For more intriguing content, you can check out updates about Stranger Things Season 5 and Squid Game Season 3, as well as the most anticipated movies of the year.
