A new subscription service priced at just $6.99 per month aims to provide a budget-friendly alternative to the ever-increasing costs of gaming subscription services like Game Pass. Launched by Indie.io, this initiative is designed to cater specifically to fans of indie games.
Introducing Indie Pass: The Indie Gaming Subscription
Set to launch on April 13, Indie Pass will be a PC-exclusive platform offering around 70 titles from Indie.io’s extensive library, which features notable games such as Echoes of the Plum Grove and the Dark Deity series. In contrast to PC Game Pass, which recently increased its prices to $16.49 per month and Ultimate to $29.99, Indie Pass stands out as a cost-effective option for gamers who primarily enjoy indie titles.
This subscription model purposely excludes AAA games, day-one blockbusters, and console support, specifically targeting a distinct niche within the gaming community. With Indie Pass, developers will benefit from a revenue-sharing system that is directly tied to player engagement; for instance, if a subscriber plays two different games in a month, each developer earns a proportional share of the total subscription revenue.
According to Jess Mitchell, the Director of Growth at Indie.io, she envisions an active and thriving gaming experience where players might engage with ten or more different titles each month.“It’s an egalitarian model, ”she states, emphasizing that the distribution of a consumer’s money directly affects developers.“Where the consumer’s money goes is where the developers are going to see it, ” Mitchell adds.
Moreover, Indie Pass imposes no exclusivity restrictions, allowing studios the flexibility to offer their games on both Indie Pass and platforms like Steam simultaneously. The service will regularly update its catalog, welcoming both new releases and classic titles.
Mitchell highlighted the potential impact of Indie Pass, referring to it as a crucial support system for developers aiming to maintain visibility in a crowded market. She noted that, “If you don’t have a huge splash on your launch, you might not experience another discoverability moment for three, six, or even twelve months after release.” The service is positioned as a fresh opportunity for developers and an affordable option for gamers seeking an extensive library of indie titles.
