Facebook is now initiating payouts for eligible users in the United States who were active from 2007 to 2022, following allegations of “mishandled”data. This initiative is part of a settlement agreement aimed at addressing concerns over data privacy on the platform.
In today’s digital landscape, safeguarding personal information on social media and other online platforms has become a paramount concern. Most websites feature consent pop-ups or options that allow users to control how their data is shared. However, during the 2010s, many Facebook users unwittingly had their data harvested by Cambridge Analytica, an event that raised significant ethical questions about data usage for political advertising.
Settlement Details and Payout Distribution
In 2022, Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, reached a $725 million settlement in a class action lawsuit that originated in 2018. After nearly three years, affected users can finally expect to receive their compensations.
Users who were active on Facebook in the U. S.during the specified time frame had until August 25 to submit a claim for their share of the settlement fund. According to recent reports, the average payout amounts to roughly $30. However, some individuals have reported much lower sums, with payouts as little as $3. The settlement fund, totaling approximately $541 million, is being divided among claimants, while $180 million is allocated for legal fees and administrative expenses.
Payouts are calculated using a points-based system, where users earn points based on their login frequency over the eligible period. It’s important to note that points do not translate directly to dollar amounts; logging in multiple times does not guarantee a proportional payout.

It is essential to remember that the deadline for claims was August 25, 2025. Users cannot simply access the website now to request their payouts. Vigilance is advised to avoid potential scams that may emerge as news of the payouts spreads.
Eligible individuals will receive an email outlining their expected compensation before payments are disbursed within a few days. Again, caution is warranted to ensure that users do not fall prey to fraudulent schemes taking advantage of this situation.
