Google’s latest foray into the foldable smartphone market—the Pixel 10 Pro Fold—has faced a significant setback following a highly publicized durability test conducted by tech influencer JerryRigEverything. In a video released on October 14, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold was subjected to a series of rigorous stress tests designed to assess its resilience against scratches, dust, and bending.

During this examination, the device unfortunately broke along a critical weakness: an antenna line near the hinge. This vulnerability has also plagued previous Pixel Fold versions, contributing to a notable failure that led to catastrophic damage.

Unprecedented Failure: Smoke and Fire During Testing

The incident escalated when the internal battery of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold short-circuited due to the breakage, causing the device to catch fire and emit smoke—an alarming occurrence that JerryRigEverything noted as a first in over a decade of conducting smartphone durability tests. He expressed concern regarding this unprecedented situation, emphasizing the severity of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s shortcomings.

JerryRigEverything was particularly critical of Google for repeating the design flaw involving the placement of the antenna lines near the hinge in its third-generation model, arguing that the same design oversight had resulted in previous models’ failures.“This is by far the weakest folding smartphone I’ve ever tested, ” he remarked. He went on to describe the scene during the unfolding process where the device’s battery failed and ignited.

In contrast, JerryRigEverything recently put the iPhone Air through similar tests, which demonstrated greater structural integrity—resisting damage even under extreme pressure. Such comparisons further underscore the challenges that Google faces in the highly competitive foldable phone sector.

The incident serves as a stark reminder that manufacturers must prioritize durability and design considerations in their products, especially in innovative categories like foldable smartphones.
