The innovative anti-smoking technology recently introduced at a shopping complex in Shenzhen is rapidly gaining attention on social media. This system employs high-tech restroom windows that transition from opaque to transparent when cigarette smoke is detected, serving as a deterrent to indoor smoking.

Located in the bustling Shuibei International Center and Shuibei Jinzuo mall within the Luohu District, the enhanced restroom facilities feature specially designed rectangular windows made of electrochromic glass. Under normal conditions, these windows maintain a milky-white appearance, but they become completely clear when built-in sensors identify smoke.

How the Technology Works to Deter Smokers

The director of operations for Shuibei Junzuo, Zhao Li, provided insights to Shenzhen TV regarding the impetus behind implementing this drastic measure. The shopping center had received numerous complaints from both customers and staff regarding smoking in restrooms. Notably, Zhao mentioned a dangerous incident involving a cigarette butt that almost ignited a trash can, highlighting the potential fire hazards petsent.

Although Shenzhen’s Smoking Control Regulations explicitly prohibit indoor smoking, this did not deter some visitors from lighting up in restroom facilities. As a result, the management felt compelled to adopt this high-tech solution in order to uphold safety standards and protect their patrons.

This anti-smoking bathroom technology has ignited considerable discussion on Chinese social media.

The introduction of this technology has sparked a heated debate across various Chinese social platforms. Many users express concerns that this level of surveillance may invade personal privacy. Legal experts have also joined the conversation. Lawyer Lu Weiguo from Guangdong Gehou Law Firm pointed out an important provision in China’s Civil Code that protects individuals’ right to privacy. He cautioned that the mall could face liability if individuals are indecently exposed while expecting privacy in restroom facilities.

This development marks another instance of innovative technology gaining traction in China, following the viral showcase of a new humanoid robot by the robotics startup EngineAi, which created a buzz when it comically kicked the CEO across a room.
