Istanbul Split: Husband Ordered to Pay Thousands in ‘Cat Alimony’ After Divorce

A Turkish man has recently gained attention after agreeing to financially support his two cats as part of his divorce settlement. This arrangement highlights the complexities of divorcing couples navigating not just financial and personal separations, but also the unique challenges presented by shared pets.

Innovative Divorce Settlement in Turkey: Cat Support Included

Identified as Buğra B.by local reports, this man has transferred custody of the couple’s two beloved felines to his ex-wife, Ezgi B. In an unprecedented move, Buğra has committed to pay Ezgi 10, 000 liras (approximately $240) every three months to assist in the care of their cats over the next decade. The terms specify that this fee will be adjusted annually to account for inflation, potentially leading to total payments of about $7, 200 over the ten-year period.

Documents from the court stipulate: “The parties have agreed that the two cats belonging to Buğra B.will stay with Ezgi B. As long as the cats remain with Ezgi B., and in any case for up to 10 years, Buğra B.will pay 10, 000 liras per month for their care, in quarterly installments.”

This arrangement is not the only financial obligation imposed in their settlement; Buğra has also agreed to pay an additional 550, 000 liras in material compensation to Ezgi.

While the couple separated due to “severe incompatibility and a breakdown in the foundation of their marriage, ” they have managed to maintain a level of civility concerning the care of their pets.

Increasingly, Turkish news outlets are reporting on similar cases, underscoring a growing trend regarding the legal treatment of animals in divorce proceedings. Historically classified as “movable property” under Turkish civil code, pets are now gaining recognition as individuals deserving care and consideration, particularly following the enactment of Turkey’s Animal Protection Law.
