IU Shares Candid Insights on Family and Finances in Recent Interview

In a revealing appearance on “Salon Drip 2, ” a web entertainment show hosted by comedian Jang Do-yeon, IU discussed her family dynamics, inheritance decisions, and her striking resemblance to her younger brother. This episode, airing on YouTube on March 11, also provided a glimpse into her latest endeavors, notably the upcoming Netflix series titled “When Life Gives You Tangerines.”

Often viewed as an introverted artist, IU humorously acknowledged the contrast between her private life and her public persona.“I actually have about four group chats, ” she said, indicating her active social circle, but noted the significance of her family chat involving 11 members.

Discussing her upbringing, IU described her family as a sizable unit, comprising around 12 individuals. She has lived with her older cousins, whom she regards as sisters despite not sharing a last name.“They’re both married now and have kids of their own, and then there’s my mom, dad, grandmother, younger brother, and me, ” she elaborated.

IU also shed light on her playful interactions with her younger brother.“Everyone has a role within a family, ” she said, explaining their dynamic where she playfully teases him in a way that has become routine.“Whenever he says something, I always have a little comeback for him. It’s not intentional teasing but part of our familial rhythm.”

Adding a humorous twist, the host Jang Do-yeon mentioned a rumor about their school experience.“I heard your brother transferred schools because you two looked too similar.” IU laughed, confirming the truth: “Yeah, we do look a lot alike. On my worst days, I basically look just like him.”

Reflecting on their changing appearances, IU remarked, “He was really cute when he was little, but now he’s taken a different path. I’m constantly in the public eye, so maintaining my appearance is essential, whereas he enjoys living life on his terms, ” prompting laughter from the audience.

Unexpected Stance on Inheritance

In a surprising turn, IU disclosed her thoughts on family inheritance.“I asked my parents about their plans for division, and my dad said they would split it equally among the four of you. I jokingly told them, ‘I’m fine, I’ll opt out—just divide it into thirds instead, ‘” showcasing her independent take on financial matters.

Despite her choice to forgo the family inheritance, IU has made significant strides in building her own wealth through real estate investments. In 2022, she acquired a luxury apartment in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam, valued at around 13 billion KRW (approximately 9 million USD).Furthermore, she owns a studio in Gwa-cheon, Gyeong-gi Province, purchased for 4.6 billion KRW (approximately 3.2 million USD), along with a private villa in Yang-pyeong County, Gyeong-gi Province, estimated at 3 billion KRW (around 2.1 million USD), which serves as a vacation retreat.

These investments demonstrate her sharp financial insight and reinforce her desire for financial independence.
