As Black Ops 7 continues its lifecycle, a growing number of players are turning their attention toward the future. Although no official announcements have been made, indications suggest that the 2026 iteration of Call of Duty will be Modern Warfare 4, crafted by the renowned developers at Infinity Ward.

Various leaks have already surfaced, revealing snippets about the game, including that it might feature segments set in Korea. Reports indicate that MW4 could revert many gameplay adjustments introduced in Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, potentially resembling the mechanics of Modern Warfare 2 (2022).However, Infinity Ward has cautioned fans regarding the validity of information circulating online.

Rumors Surface About the Return of Riot Shields

Reliable leaker Alaix shared on X that “Riot Shields might be back in MW4.” The tweet lacked further details regarding potential modifications to this controversial melee weapon.

For those unfamiliar, the Riot Shield serves as a primary weapon, allowing players to exchange their firearm for a large protective barrier. While it prohibits any ranged attacks (except for melee options), it offers substantial defense against incoming fire, compelling opponents to either aim for the player’s feet or attempt a flanking maneuver.

A notable tactic known as “turtling” involves utilizing the Overkill perk to carry two primary weapons—one being the Riot Shield which is worn on the player’s back. This effectively blocks shots from behind, enhancing player survivability.

Since its introduction in 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, the Riot Shield has been featured in nearly every Infinity Ward installment of Call of Duty, with the solitary exception being Infinite Warfare. Its anticipated return in 2026 is not surprising, but after its absence in Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, some players may have wished to see the last of this weapon.
