We recently had the opportunity to interview Minoru Kidooka, the CEO of Arc System Works, about the exciting new entry in the fighting game genre: Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. This title marks a significant venture for the company as it takes the reins from the long-standing legacy of Capcom’s crossover fighting games.
For years, Marvel’s fighting game landscape was primarily dominated by Capcom, producing several iconic titles that still hold loyal fanbases. However, enthusiasm waned after the less-than-stellar launch of Marvel vs Capcom Infinite in 2017. Many feared this would signal the end of Marvel’s fighting game presence until June 2025, when Arc System Works announced their collaboration with the Marvel brand.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls departs from past crossover formats and offers a unique 4v4 tag fighting experience, showcasing characters exclusively from the Marvel universe. Known for their acclaimed franchises such as Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, and Dragon Ball FighterZ, Arc System Works aims to carve out its place in the Marvel universe with this new title.
Arc System Works: A Strategic Partnership with Marvel
Kidooka shared insights into why partnering with Marvel was an obvious choice for Arc System Works, emphasizing the need to broaden their audience outside the fighting game community, where they still hold a relatively low profile.
“As you may know, historically we’ve been making a lot of different games and collaborating with different IPs. You know, we had Sailor Moon back in the day, Fist of the North Star, Persona, DragonBall — we’ve done so many different games with different IPs. I think this is a continuation of that. We’re constantly thinking about what new things, what excitement we can bring to the table. Working with Marvel and putting out Tokon is part of that.”
He elaborated on Marvel’s significant influence, noting that this collaboration opens avenues for Arc System Works to introduce themselves to new audiences while showcasing their expertise in game development, particularly in the competitive fighting atmosphere.
“Now, we’re here at Evo 2025 showcasing our first demo. I don’t know if you saw, but the line was crazy. It’s so long. I think that really speaks to how we made the right decision as far as who to collaborate with at this time, ” he added.

Not a Replacement, But an Evolution
Undoubtedly, stepping into the shoes of Marvel vs Capcom presents its own set of challenges. Kidooka acknowledges the influential legacy of this series but emphasizes their focus on imbuing Tokon with the distinct flair that Arc System Works is renowned for.
“We hope to take up the mantle [from Marvel vs Capcom].But I think more so than leading this next generation, we’re more focused on how to integrate Arc System Works’ unique way of expressing and crafting games with the huge IP that is Marvel.”
His vision is not to merely replicate what has come before but to solidify and carve out Arc System Works’ identity within the Marvel franchise.“It’s not really about the next generation of Marvel games, but it’s more like, ‘How do we solidify and establish our identity in the Marvel IP?’” he stated.

A Commitment to Innovation Beyond Guilty Gear
Marvel Tokon is just one of many projects currently underway at Arc System Works, which is diversifying its portfolio across multiple genres. During their recent showcase, several new titles were revealed, eliciting a range of reactions within the fighting game community.
Kidooka addressed the mixed feedback, asserting that continual growth and innovation are crucial for the company to thrive in a competitive market.“Arc System Works has been around for about 38 years now, and Guilty Gear, our flagship title, has been around for 27 years. In recent years we’ve been branching out into other fighting games, ”he remarked.
He expressed a determination to expand their creative boundaries, recognizing the volatility of the gaming industry: “It’s very volatile. Studios are going down left and right. It’s really hard to have a wide scope, but we have to still keep challenging ourselves to expand outwards into different categories.”
“I can’t retire until we release a hit game that isn’t Guilty Gear. Please, help me retire!”
