Recently, it was reported that Meta has developed flirty AI chatbots designed to mimic the personas of renowned celebrities, including Taylor Swift and Scarlett Johansson, without obtaining their prior consent.
Chatbots are not a novel concept; they have been part of online interactions for years, notably with platforms like MSN Messenger hosting numerous bots. However, the evolution of AI technology has significantly intensified in recent years, leading to advanced applications like ChatGPT and Grok, which are increasingly utilized for both dialogue and relationship simulations. Astonishingly, surveys indicate that approximately 40% of adults would consider entering a relationship with an AI chatbot, resembling scenarios depicted in the film ‘Her’.
These AI chatbots often impersonate actual individuals, including famous personalities, creating a simulation that can feel remarkably authentic.
Controversy Surrounding AI Chatbots of Celebrities
According to a report by Reuters, employees at Meta have reportedly created AI parodies of several high-profile celebrities, notably Taylor Swift and Scarlett Johansson, without securing authorization from the stars themselves.
The report highlights that while many chatbots were user-generated, at least three—including two associated with Swift—were developed by a Meta employee. Disturbingly, these chatbots were found to have produced intimate images of the celebrities and made sexually suggestive remarks to users.
In response to the controversy, Meta’s spokesperson, Andy Stone, stated that this incident should not have occurred, reiterating their policy which permits the creation of images featuring public figures but is meant to prohibit nude, intimate, or sexually suggestive content.“Like others, we permit the generation of images containing public figures, but our policies are intended to prohibit nude, intimate or sexually suggestive imagery, ” Stone noted.
Following the findings, Meta has removed numerous chatbots, including those labeled as parodies. According to the report, while parodies are permitted under Meta’s guidelines, many were not appropriately tagged as such.
In light of recent developments, including Swift’s engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce, it appears that AI will face the challenge of keeping pace with the real-life events in celebrity culture.
