Netflix has responded to recent comments made by Matt Damon and Conan O’Brien regarding the platform’s alleged tendency to oversimplify its movies and shows for the benefit of distracted viewers. Both stars raised concerns over the expectation that narratives are repetitively articulated to engage audiences who are often preoccupied with their phones.
During promotions for the Netflix film The Rip in January, Matt Damon remarked on a new storytelling trend: “reiterating the plot three or four times in the dialogue because people are on their phones while they’re watching.” This sentiment was echoed by Conan O’Brien during the Oscars, where he stated that certain studios were requiring filmmakers to reiterate plot points as a means to cater to modern audiences who are often only half paying attention due to distractions.
O’Brien, alongside Sterling K. Brown, humorously parodied a well-known scene from Casablanca, mocking the idea of repeatedly stating the film’s plot. This sparked frustration among Netflix executives, who were keen to defend the platform’s reputation in light of these claims.

At a press event held on March 18, Dan Lin, Netflix’s head of film, asserted that there is no directive for filmmakers to revisit plot points multiple times. According to Lin, “There is no such principle.” He added, “We all laughed when we watched that bit at the Oscars, but there’s no basis for that comment. Our focus is on delivering exceptional movies.”
Further reinforcing this stance, Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, delivered a robust rebuttal, stating, “I find it incredibly disrespectful to think that we could impose such a negative directive, and that creators would simply acquiesce.” She emphasized the importance of recognizing the sophistication of their audience, saying, “We acknowledge how attentive fans are, and we respect their intelligence because they notice every detail.”
