Apple Maps is reportedly on track to incorporate in-app advertisements, following a similar path to Google Maps, as the tech giant seeks to boost the revenue potential of its mapping service.

As indicated by a recent article from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple could announce the new advertising initiative as soon as March 2026, with implementation possibly occurring later this year.

Apple Maps Ads: What to Expect This Summer

This new feature would allow businesses to buy ad placements that elevate their visibility within search results. For instance, a local sushi restaurant might bid to ensure it appears at the top when users search for sushi options, establishing a competitive bidding model.

These advertisements are anticipated to be visible on various Apple devices, including iPhones, as well as the web version of Apple Maps. This strategy closely aligns with existing advertising frameworks employed by platforms like Google Maps and Yelp, where promoted entries are displayed above non-sponsored listings.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by Apple to enhance its services division, which now surpasses $100 billion in annual revenue and comprises more than a quarter of the company’s total earnings. Just a decade ago, this segment represented less than 10% of Apple’s revenue.

Apple Ads, the company’s newly rebranded advertising branch, remains relatively modest in size but is projected to generate around $8.5 billion this year, according to eMarketer analytics. The division, overseen by Todd Teresi and reporting to senior vice president Eddy Cue, is gearing up to expand its market presence.

This shift toward incorporating advertisements coincides with growing scrutiny faced by Apple’s service sector. Regulatory bodies are challenging the App Store ecosystem, and Apple’s longstanding search agreement with Google is becoming more precarious, especially with the emergence of AI-driven search alternatives.

Apple has already begun its advertising expansion across other platforms. Recently, the company introduced additional ad placements in the App Store, launched advertising during its Major League Soccer broadcasts on Apple TV, and made adjustments to its News and Podcasts apps to facilitate more advertising opportunities.
