Once a dominant force in online multiplayer gaming, the popularity of Battle Royale titles like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone appears to be on a steep decline, according to recent findings. New data indicates that interest in this genre is fading, as gamers gravitate toward open-world sandbox experiences instead.
A report from NewZoo outlines a striking reversal in player engagement. Between 2024 and 2025, the amount of time spent on Battle Royale games fell significantly, while the playtime for sandbox titles surged during the same period. Unlike Battle Royale games, which are rooted in match-based competition where players fight to be the last one standing, sandbox games offer expansive environments for exploration and creative freedom.
From Battle Royale to Sandbox: A Gaming Shift
The NewZoo analysis reveals a noteworthy transformation in player preferences, as detailed by Nexus Hub. The report states, “A recent report from NewZoo revealed that interest in Battle Royale games has dropped by 27%, measuring playtime in 2025 compared to 2024. By contrast, interest in open-world sandbox games increased by a massive 36% in that same time frame.”
This drastic shift in engagement levels is particularly pronounced when juxtaposed with trends in other gaming genres. While the popularity of shooters experienced a 5% decline and RPGs saw a slight 1% decrease, the spike in sandbox games indicates a clear change in gamer preferences. Adventure games also noted a modest increase of 6% in playtime.

The observed trends have led to substantial decreases for notable titles. For example, Fortnite experienced a 29% drop in player engagement in 2025. Similarly, Apex Legends recorded a 24% decrease, and Call of Duty faced a steep decline of 33%.Other popular games like Overwatch and Destiny 2 also witnessed significant reductions in playtime, declining by 29% and 40%, respectively.
Conversely, games such as Minecraft and Roblox have maintained strong engagement throughout this timeframe. This shift clearly illustrates gamers’ evolving preferences, favoring sandbox titles that prioritize creativity and exploration over competitive match-based formats.
