Jagex, the developer behind the iconic MMORPGs RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, has made a firm commitment not to utilize generative artificial intelligence for creating any in-game content in either version of the game. This stance reflects the developer’s dedication to preserving the integrity of player experiences.

The studio acknowledges the potential benefits of AI technology, suggesting it may be employed in optimizing internal processes and enhancing workflow efficiency, but stresses that this will not extend to player-facing materials or content.

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, James Dobrowski, Jagex’s senior vice president of product, elaborated on the company’s clear demarcation regarding AI use and what players can anticipate from Jagex’s developmental philosophy.

Ensuring Responsible Use of AI in Game Development

As reported, Jagex’s policy prohibits the use of generative AI to “drive creativity”or produce any assets that players will interact with directly, such as visuals, audio, and other significant components of gameplay. Dobrowski emphasized that while AI tools may offer support to developers within the studio, these tools will not generate any content that appears in the actual games.

Jagex has categorically ruled out employing generative AI for content creation across both RuneScape titles. Dobrowski noted, “Where we are open to the use of AI is in things like tooling efficiency, ” asserting the studio’s commitment to streamlining workflows to enhance the development experience and outcomes for their staff.

Additionally, these measures will apply to external partners as well, with Jagex conducting audits to ensure adherence to these guidelines and to prevent misuse of AI technologies.

In January, the studio marked the 25th anniversary of RuneScape with special celebrations, unveiling a comprehensive roadmap that outlines significant improvements slated for the game. Furthermore, Old School RuneScape also received a detailed roadmap for upcoming updates.

In a notable legal development, a UK judge ruled on January 25 that currency acquired in Old School RuneScape could be classified as property, opening new avenues for theft claims related to in-game assets.
