In May 2025, YouTube sensations and urban exploration enthusiasts Sam & Colby stirred a wave of concern among their followers when they posted a scheduled tweet claiming to be lost in the labyrinthine Paris Catacombs. Their message read, “We have been underground in the Paris Catacombs for much longer than anticipated, meaning we can’t find our way out. We have official people looking for us, but if you don’t hear from us within six more hours, send help.” Fortunately, about two hours later, they shared an update, revealing themselves back above ground in Paris, looking surprisingly grimy yet unharmed.

While the duo’s predicament in the Paris Catacombs is alarming, such experiences are not uncommon. Spanning over 300 kilometers, the catacombs—filled with the remains of millions—are notorious for disorienting visitors. This reality underscores the importance of navigating the catacombs with a guide.

Unexpected Encounters in the Catacombs

During their exploration, Sam and Colby faced what they described as uncomfortable living conditions beneath Paris. Sam reported that the confined spaces triggered his claustrophobia, making their adventure even more intense.

Colby recounted, “It was one of the most physically taxing videos we’ve ever filmed. There was water that rose as high as our chests, leaving us completely drenched. We encountered numerous tight spaces where we had to crawl, including a cave section that required us to army-crawl for almost half a football field to reach one of the bone-filled chambers.”

The Paris Catacombs have seen numerous reports of lost visitors over the years, yet only one confirmed death has been recorded since 1793. Surprisingly, this was not the most alarming aspect of Sam and Colby’s journey. They revealed they encountered an unknown individual in the pitch-dark tunnels, someone not part of their small group. Colby hinted at the intrigue of this meeting, stating, “I don’t want to spoil what happens, but let’s just say it was a wild encounter.”

Sam and Colby are not alone in their exploration of the Paris Catacombs; notable YouTuber PewDiePie also ventured into the depths as part of a promotional event for the horror film ‘As Above, So Below’ in 2014. This film chronicles the journey of a team of explorers who descend into the catacombs in search of the Philosopher’s Stone but discover far more than they bargained for.
