The revered Shaolin Temple in China is currently shrouded in controversy following the removal of its abbot, Shi Yongxin, who now faces serious allegations. On July 28, the Chinese Buddhist Association and the temple’s governing board made the significant announcement regarding Shi’s dismissal, citing investigations into claims of embezzlement, moral misconduct, and accusations regarding fathering illegitimate children. As it stands, Shi is under scrutiny from multiple governmental bodies, including the Religious Affairs Bureau, Public Security Bureau, and Disciplinary Inspection Commission.

Ashton Chen’s Connection to the Scandal

Amid the unfolding scandal, the name of Ashton Chen, once celebrated as China’s most renowned child martial arts star, has resurfaced prominently on social media platforms like Weibo. Chen, a distinguished 30th-generation disciple of Shaolin, is notably linked to Shi Yongxin, who mentored him from a young age. His father, Chen Dongsheng, a former master at Shaolin and a close confidant of Shi, adds another layer to this complex narrative.

This familial connection has fueled speculation regarding the Chen family’s potential involvement in the scandal. However, it’s important to note that no formal accusations have been lodged against either Ashton or his father.

Born in 1988, Ashton Chen displayed remarkable talent from the age of two, training directly under Shi Yongxin. His exceptional skills in traditional martial arts—such as Luohan Fist, Shaolin Stick, and Drunken Sword—earned him national recognition. By the age of four, he had already won numerous martial arts competitions, and he made his acting debut at five, eventually becoming a household name in the 1990s through movies like Shaolin Popey, China Dragon, and Shaolin Hero.

During his height of fame, Chen was reported to earn millions annually and amassed a personal fortune that reached approximately 350 million RMB by his teenage years. After stepping away from the entertainment industry, he pursued studies abroad and eventually took over his father’s substantial business empire, which is valued at a staggering 1.4 billion USD.

Controversies at the Family Martial Arts School

The Shaolin Tongshan Martial Arts School, managed by Chen Dongsheng, has been linked to two harrowing incidents:

  • In April 2019, a 6-year-old girl tragically died shortly after enrolling. While the school cited a pre-existing medical condition, witnesses reported visible bruises, raising alarms about possible physical abuse.
  • In August 2019, a 13-year-old student was allegedly sexually assaulted by an instructor, leading to the detention of the accused. However, both incidents gradually fell from public attention, fueling claims of potential cover-ups.

Following these scandals, Ashton Chen publicly distanced himself from the martial arts school, asserting he played no role in its operations. This statement contrasts with past interviews where he acknowledged assisting his father, thus attracting public skepticism regarding his claims.

Alleged Connections to Triad-Linked Business Figures

Amplifying these concerns is the reported association of the Chen family with Wu Diao, a significant figure within Taiwan’s Zhulian Gang, known as an offshoot of the Triad Society. Wu, who is considered Ashton Chen’s godfather and a financial backer, currently leads a prominent film production company in Taiwan.

These links have raised eyebrows, especially considering that numerous prominent Chinese entertainers, including Andy Lau, Jet Li, and Wu Jing, have collaborated with companies connected to Shi Yongxin. Nonetheless, there remains no verified evidence to implicate them in any wrongdoing.

The public discourse is fervent, with many urging caution and patience as they await the outcome of the ongoing investigations. Currently, neither Ashton Chen nor his family has been charged with any criminal activities.
