The much-anticipated extortion trial involving South Korean football star Son Heung-min officially launched on July 17 at the Seoul Central District Court, highlighting stark differences in the defense strategies of the two individuals charged.

Defendants’ Divergent Accounts

In the courtroom, Ms. Yang, who faces charges of extortion and attempted extortion, categorically denied any wrongdoing. Under the scrutiny of Presiding Judge Lim Jeong-bin, Yang’s legal counsel argued for her innocence, specifically denying involvement in the allegations brought against her.

Conversely, Mr. Yong has openly confessed to the attempted extortion charges, admitting to colluding with Yang to blackmail Son for substantial sums of money.

Details of the Allegations

According to prosecutors, Yang allegedly extorted ₩300 million (approximately $215, 000 USD) from Son in June 2024, reportedly with the aid of a shaman known only as “C, ” who is expected to provide testimony next week. The accusation states that Yang sent Son a fetal ultrasound image, falsely suggesting he was the father, and requested payment to preserve his reputation.

The Romantic Angle and Additional Demands

The situation escalated when Yang initiated a romantic relationship with Yong. Between March and May, Yong allegedly pressured Son for an extra ₩70 million (about $50, 300 USD), threatening to disclose details of an abortion. Although this initiative was unsuccessful, both Yang and Yong were apprehended in May.

Judicial Proceedings and Upcoming Hearings

Due to the conflicting pleadings from the accused, the court has opted for separate trials for each defendant. Nonetheless, the verdicts will be rendered simultaneously. The next court session is scheduled for August 28 at 5 p.m. KST, where witness testimonies from Son’s representatives and Yang’s final defense arguments are anticipated.
