The mastermind behind Tetris, Alexey Pajitnov, has stated that Rubik’s Cubes should be launched into space as a testament to human civilization. This remarkable assertion emerged during a rare public exchange between Pajitnov and Ernő Rubik, the creator of the iconic Rubik’s Cube.

This unprecedented meeting was held to celebrate the launch of the Rubik’s Tetris Cube, a unique hybrid puzzle that combines the classic elements of both Rubik’s Cube and Tetris tetrominoes. This crossover is designed not just for visual appeal but also to challenge players in innovative new ways.

The Significance of the Rubik’s Tetris Cube

Distinct from the traditional Rubik’s Cube, the Rubik’s Tetris Cube requires participants to fit together six different tetromino shapes, as opposed to merely matching colors. Upon successful completion, this puzzle can be elegantly showcased on a stand that mimics the appearance of the line tetromino.

Pajitnov expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Basically, I am so excited about meeting Mr. Rubik today. I think that this cube is what people don’t appreciate in full, because I believe it’s a symbol of modern civilization.” He emphasized the cultural significance of the Rubik’s Cube, suggesting it merits a place among the artifacts sent into space to represent humanity.

“If I were to send objects into interstellar space as evidence of human civilization, the Rubik’s Cube would definitely make the list, ” he added, referencing past endeavors such as the golden records on the Voyager spacecraft. He highlighted the simplicity and universality of the Rubik’s Cube as key to its status as a cultural artifact.

When questioned whether Tetris itself should be included in an interstellar archive, Pajitnov reasoned against it, noting that the game relies on specific computer hardware, whereas the Rubik’s Cube is a tangible object that transcends such limitations.

Additionally, Pajitnov shared insights on the essence of puzzles, asserting that their true value lies in the joy they provide rather than the competition they foster. He stated that the ability to create moments of happiness through puzzles remains central to their value, and this would not be overshadowed by advancements in artificial intelligence.

The discussion placed Pajitnov and Rubik under the shared limelight, with the Rubik’s Tetris Cube serving as a symbol of their collaborative creativity.
