In the world of Windrose, expanding your inventory is paramount. The inconvenience of spending over 10 minutes sailing to an island only to fill your backpack in under a minute can be frustrating. Increasing your backpack capacity early in the game can significantly reduce these tiresome round trips, thus saving you valuable time.
Strategies for Expanding Your Backpack in Windrose

The first step in boosting your inventory space is to acquire a better backpack. The simplest option is the Torn Sailor Backpack, which can be crafted at a Workbench Level 1.
To create this basic backpack, you will need:
- 2x Coarse Fabric
- 1x Rope
Both Coarse Fabric and Rope can be produced using 3x Plant Fibers at the same workbench. The Torn Sailor Backpack provides an additional 4 backpack slots, making it an excellent starter choice.
But what if you’re looking for an even larger capacity? Upgrading might seem daunting, especially for newcomers to survival-crafting games.

For a larger backpack, you will need to craft the Sailor Backpack. However, this requires a Level 2 Workbench, even if you have all necessary materials ready. Unlike other equipment, there isn’t a simple upgrade option visible when you access the workbench.
To upgrade your workbench, press B to open the building panel and navigate to the “Crafting & Utilities” tab, where you will locate the Workbench section. You’ll notice a Sawhorse icon next to the Workbench craft.
To craft the Sawhorse, gather:
- 20x Wood
- 10x Copper Ingots
Once crafted, place the Sawhorse within your bonfire area. While not directly interactable, its placement automatically upgrades your workbench in that location—something to consider if you maintain multiple bases.
Upon successfully upgrading to a Level 2 Workbench, you can now create the Sailor Backpack, which requires:
- 1x Torn Sailor Backpack
- 5x Rough Hide
- 2x Copper Ingots
This new backpack provides an additional 8 slots, showcasing the progression system in crafting. As you advance through the game, you can acquire even larger backpacks.
If the Sawhorse is not yet available, consider progressing through the initial quests first. Additionally, if you’re curious about acquiring a ship with inventory space, you will unlock one after completing the “I Need a Bigger Boat” quest, enabling you to obtain the Ketch.
