Twitch recently eliminated a controversial feature enabling users to gift 1, 000 subscriptions for under $5, 000, following pushback from many streamers. While this significant discount on subscriptions raised eyebrows, it might not be permanently removed from the platform.

Introduced on November 26, the ability to gift 1, 000 subscriptions at once ostensibly offered a $1, 000 discount off the typical $6, 000 price. This intriguing offer caught the attention of both fans and content creators.

One notable streamer, Emiru, was among the first to receive this monumental gift, leaving her visibly shocked and unsure of how to react. In a viral clip that circulated on social media, Emiru expressed her wonder at the unexpected gesture, labeling the amount as “crazy.”

Streamers Raise Alarm Over Financial Risks Linked to Gifting Subscriptions

In the wake of the feature’s introduction, many influencers voiced their concerns regarding the potential financial repercussions for viewers. Prominent streamer Ludwig criticized Twitch, suggesting the platform’s motivations centered solely on extracting more money from users. He drew attention to the myriad monetization features Twitch has implemented over time, such as Hype Trains, while simultaneously neglecting the improvement of its mobile application.

VTuber Lucia also expressed her apprehension, highlighting that the feature could lead viewers unable to afford such donations to make unwise financial decisions. She remarked, “They could put themselves in a horrible position, ”while contemplating Twitch’s recent financial performance.“Twitch takes 30-50% of this, makes you wonder why they’re raising limits on gifting subs.”

Lucia continued to acknowledge her gratitude towards Twitch for providing her platform but emphasized a prevailing sense of disconnection, stating, “I can tell their focus is on profit, profit, profit and there’s barely any communication on any of this.”

Moreover, fellow VTuber Akame raised concerns about the risk of chargebacks associated with such large gifts, pointing out that scammers often exploit this mechanism, leaving streamers to face dire financial consequences. Akame expressed, “I would be scared to receive that amount of subs. What if they do a chargeback and you just sit there with a debt staring at you?”

As discussions around the feature intensified, Twitch opted to retract the option to gift 1, 000 subscriptions. Observers noted that this move may simply coincide with a promotional discount set to expire on December 1. The community now awaits to see if the feature will make a return or if streamer feedback will persuade Twitch to reconsider its approach entirely.
