Recently, two deep-sea oarfish, commonly referred to as “doomsday fish, ” captured widespread attention after washing ashore in Cabo, Mexico. This rare appearance sparked considerable fascination across the internet, highlighting an enduring curiosity about the enigmatic inhabitants of our oceans.
While numerous extraordinary animals inhabit various ecosystems, ocean dwellers often take center stage due to their elusive nature. With many species residing at depths unreachable to humans, sightings of these creatures tend to generate a flurry of questions and intrigue, especially when they surface unexpectedly.
The Oarfish: A Rare Encounter
Earlier this year, in February, two oarfish were filmed on a beach in Mexico, where they are typically found at depths exceeding 3000 feet. The unusual sighting of these gigantic creatures drew interest and excitement from locals and online communities alike.
During the incident, Monica Pittenger shared a video documenting the awe-inspiring moment on her Instagram page on March 4. She recounted her initial disbelief, comparing the event to something out of a fictional film, and expressing concern for the fish attempting to return to the water.“It was unbelievable, ” she noted.“When I saw the second one, I couldn’t help but feel a bit uneasy as well.”
Pittenger later confirmed that both oarfish swam back into the ocean, describing the experience as “surreal” once she realized how rare such an encounter was. However, the video and sighting have stirred anxiety online, given the ominous nickname associated with the fish. As one viewer remarked, “It’s a beautiful story, but knowing that two ‘doomsday fish’ appeared at this time is unsettling.”
Others commented on the unusual nature of the sighting, recalling that the last oarfish found ashore was deceased in San Diego in 2024, which adds to the mystery surrounding these deep-sea dwellers.
Despite skepticism, with some viewers questioning the authenticity of the video, the evidence supports its genuine nature, preserving the awe and wonder of these rare marine phenomena.
