Introducing Microsoft’s New “App Updates” Feature in Windows 11
Microsoft is currently developing an innovative “App Updates” page within the Settings app of Windows 11. This feature, which has appeared in recent preview builds, aims to streamline the process of updating certain applications by integrating it into the familiar Windows Update framework.
Understanding the New App Updates Page
Located in the “Apps” section of the Settings app, the “App Updates” page serves as a new avenue for users to maintain app currency. However, it’s important to note that it does not consolidate the update process for all applications. Instead, it acts as an alternative method designed specifically for applications configured to utilize Windows Update instead of the Microsoft Store.
Challenges in App Maintenance
Many users and IT administrators have encountered challenges related to app updates, particularly regarding access to the Microsoft Store. Due to organizational rules, some enterprises may restrict or even remove the Store application altogether. In rare instances, individual users might opt to uninstall it, further complicating update protocols for critical apps, particularly those that are foundational to the operating system’s functionality.
Closing the Update Loop
The introduction of the “App Updates” page is a strategic move by Microsoft to address these gaps. Instead of depending solely on the Store for app updates, users will now have the option to manually check for updates for selected applications directly through Windows Update. This functionality is particularly beneficial for enterprise environments, where the Store may be inaccessible.

Limitations of the App Updates Page
Despite its advantages, the “App Updates” page is not a catch-all solution for app updates. It offers a supplementary interface for specific applications but does not replace existing methods of app management. Users who acquired applications via the Microsoft Store will still need to rely on that platform for updates. Furthermore, some applications may still necessitate manual downloading and installation of updates.
