How to Set or Change Your Buddy in Pokemon Go

To designate a Pokémon as your Buddy for the first time, follow these steps:

  1. Tap your Trainer icon in the bottom left corner of the overworld screen.
  2. Scroll to the ‘Me’ tab.
  3. Press the ‘Buddy’ icon, represented by two smiling faces.
  4. Select your Buddy.

If you already have a Buddy but wish to change it, follow this modified process:

  1. Tap your Buddy’s portrait at the bottom left corner of the screen, next to your Trainer icon.
  2. Scroll down to click the ‘Swap Buddies’ button.
  3. Select to swap Buddies and choose your new companion.

Pokemon Go Buddy Levels

As you wander with your Buddy, you’ll reach Buddy Levels based on the number of hearts you’ve accumulated:

  • Good Buddy: Your Buddy will walk alongside you on the map.
  • Great Buddy: Your Buddy will counter a Pokeball thrown at it and collect presents.
  • Ultra Buddy: Your Buddy will guide you to PokeStops for extra rewards and gather souvenirs.
  • Best Buddy: Your Buddy will earn a special Ribbon and receive a CP boost.
