Pokémon Go accidentally created a mount via a glitch

A clipping bug in Pokémon Go accidentally allowed one Buddy Pokémon to ride on another, which is definitely not an intentional feature on the developers’ part.

The Pokémon franchise seems like an ideal choice for a mount system, with Ash riding Pokémon from the earliest days of the anime. If you could use bikes for more speed, then surely larger Pokémon like Gallopa could fulfill the same role.

Unfortunately, the mainline Pokémon games were released on handheld systems for years, which meant hardware limitations restricted what could be included in the games. Fans weren’t able to ride Pokémon until Generation 7, when Pokémon Sun & Moon allowed certain Pokémon to be used as mounts.

Mounts are not available in Pokémon Go, although you can have a companion Pokémon through the game’s Buddy system. These two aspects of gameplay were eventually combined, albeit unintentionally, via one of the many bugs clipping of Pokémon Go.

A user on the Pokémon Go Reddit shared a bug showing their Mewtwo Buddy riding a shiny Insolourdo, even though the player doesn’t actually own the shiny Pokémon. Fans were quick to joke about the compromising position the two Pokémon found themselves in.

“See, when a Pokémon mom and dad love each other a lot…” one user joked, while another said, “That’s how other Pokémon are made.”

One user commented: “It’s Valentine’s Day…” to which the author replied: “I don’t approve of my Mewtwo having a relationship with a Pokémon I don’t even have. It kind of looks like he’s cheating on me.”

Some users avoided the obvious jokes and actually commented about Mewtwo riding Insolourdo. “Towards the horizon, faithful steed!” one user wrote, while another joked: “It’s just a knockoff Sylveroy.”

It’s a shame that the concept of riding Pokémon isn’t part of Pokémon Go, because there’s certainly room for the mechanic in a game where the main character’s avatar travels a lot.

Unfortunately, it would take a lot of work to animate all of these elements, especially with so many clothing options in the game, so it’s unlikely we’ll see it included in a future update and we’ll have to rely on clipping bugs of Pokémon Go to see it happen.
