In the mobile game, how do dedicated biomes for different areas function in Pokemon Go?
The mobile game Pokemon Go recently introduced the Rediscover Kanto event, which incorporated a variety of fresh biomes into the game.
When a trainer encounters a Pokemon, the background will no longer remain static. Instead, it will change according to the real-world environment the player is in.
Additionally, biomes have a deeper impact on Pokemon Go beyond their surface-level appearance. In this section, we will cover all aspects of biomes and their effects in the game.
Pokemon Go: Exploring Biomes
In brief, biomes in Pokemon Go are alterations to the in-game environment that mirror a player’s actual surroundings and can influence the types of Pokemon that appear in a specific area.
For instance, Water-type Pokemon are more likely to be found at the beach, whereas Bug and Grass-types are often encountered in a forest.
On the catch screen, biomes can also change their appearance depending on the time of year. For instance, during spring, trainers may notice an increase in cherry blossom trees in forested areas, while the grass may take on a more yellow hue in the autumn months.
Pokemon Go: Every Biome Released
Currently, there are four officially confirmed biomes in Pokemon Go, each with a unique appearance. The list below includes all of the current biomes in the game:
- Forest
- Beach
- Mountain
- City
According to the screenshots shared by developer Niantic, it appears that fans can anticipate the addition of new biomes or variations of current ones in the future.
Several unreleased biomes are still in development, such as a lakeside biome, a grassy plains biome, and a park biome filled with trees.

Pokemon Go: Biome Wild Spawns
Since the Rediscover Kanto event, there has been an increase in the appearance of Generation 1 Pokemon in various biomes.
For instance, mountain biomes tend to have a higher occurrence of Sandshrew, Clefairy, and Zubat, whereas the beach is a more common spot for Squirtle, Psyduck, and Seel.
In the future, certain biomes may only have certain Pokemon spawn, such as the beach biome exclusively spawning Wiglett.
It is uncertain if this will persist beyond the conclusion of the Rediscover Kanto event on Thursday, May 9, 2024, or if they will be substituted with Pokemon from different Generations in accordance with future events.
