Many of the Mythical Pokemon can only be obtained by completing time-limited Special Research quests, making it difficult to obtain them through other means.
All Shadow Legendaries in Pokemon Go
Shadow Pokemon are a unique type of Pokemon found in the game, believed to have been abandoned by Team GO Rocket. These creatures possess a distinct appearance with red eyes and purple auras, causing them to deal 20% more damage and also receive 20% more damage from opponents.
The following is a comprehensive list of all the Legendary Pokemon that also have a Shadow version available in Pokemon Go.
Articuno | Ho-Oh |
Zapdos | Regirock |
Moltres | Royal |

How to catch Legendaries in Pokemon Go
The most common method of obtaining a Legendary Pokemon in Pokemon Go is by defeating it in a 5-Star Raid Battle. These battles take place at Gyms and usually require the collaboration of at least five other Trainers to emerge victorious.
After defeating a Legendary, a set number of Premier Balls will be provided to attempt to capture it. Due to their low catch rates, there is no guarantee of successfully capturing a defeated Legendary.
Catching a Legendary requires a mix of timing, patience, and luck.
By successfully executing Excellent Throws and Curve Balls, you can improve your odds. Additionally, participating in a battle or Gym that aligns with your team’s color can earn you more Premier Balls to use for throwing.
Don’t forget to stock up on Raid Passes before embarking on your Legendary hunting journey, as these valuable items are necessary for participation. Check out our guide for obtaining Remote Raid Passes below.
The Galarian versions of Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos operate under slightly different rules. These regional variants can only be found in the wild by using a Daily Adventure Incense, but they are extremely elusive.
In contrast to other Legendaries in the game, Cosmog operates in a unique manner. The sole method of obtaining a Cosmog is by completing the Cosmic Companion Special Research story. Furthermore, this story also enables the evolution of Cosmog into either Solgaleo or Lunala.
Which Legendary Pokemon are currently available to catch?
The Galarian forms of the Legendary Birds (Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres) can be found in the game at all times. However, they can only be encountered by using the Daily Adventure Incense and have a significantly high rate of fleeing.
The Lake Trio (Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf) can be encountered in the wild or through 5-star Raid battles, but they are restricted to a specific region.
In May, players will have the opportunity to encounter Shadow Suicune at Shadow Raids every weekend. Additionally, 5-Star Raids will feature Tapu Fini, Regirock, Blacephalon, and Stakataka throughout the month, with each of these Pokémon having their own dedicated Raid Hour.
To stay informed about the current Legendaries featured in 5-Star Raid Battles, it is recommended to refer to our monthly updated Raid Boss guide. Niantic frequently changes the Legendaries that appear in these battles, making the guide the most reliable source for the latest information on catchable Pokémon.
Typically, only one Legendary species will be obtainable at any given time, although this may vary during special occasions. For instance, during Pokemon Go Fest 2021, all Legendary Pokemon made an appearance!
