The Pokemon Go Galarian Expedition: Taken Over event in October 2024 will introduce new Shadow Pokemon, alongside a Special Research challenge featuring Shadow Heatran.
Throughout the first half of October 2024, several exciting activities will unfold in Pokemon Go. Numerous Shiny Galarian Legendaries will join the Pokedex, and another Team Rocket takeover is on the schedule.
The Galarian Expedition: Taken Over event will not only add new members to the Team Rocket lineup but also provide the opportunity to capture Shadow Heatran through a Special Research challenge.
Dates & Times
The Galarian Expedition: Taken Over event kicks off on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 12:00 AM local time and concludes on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 8:00 PM local time.
It’s important to note that this event will coincide with the Galarian Expedition event, which will see the addition of the Shiny Galarian Legendary Birds.
Special Research & Shadow Heatran
According to Niantic, a Seasonal Special Research challenge focused on Shadow Heatran will be unlocked during this event. Participants will receive a Super Rocket Radar and have a chance to encounter Shadow Heatran.
This Special Research challenge can be redeemed until December 3, 2024, at 9:59 AM local time.

During the Take Over event, One and Three-Star Raids will feature the following Pokemon, with those eligible to be Shiny noted with an asterisk:
One-Star Raids
- Shadow Machop*
- Shadow Grimer*
- Shadow Exeggcute*
- Shadow Sudowoodo
Three-Star Raids
- Shadow Pinsir*
- Shadow Sableye*
- Shadow Mawile*
Shadow Pokemon
Niantic will rotate the Pokemon used by Team Rocket leaders. These Pokemon, which also have a chance to be Shiny, will be transformed into Shadow Pokemon and can be rescued by defeating Rocket Grunts:
- Shadow Caterpie
- Shadow Mankey
- Shadow Roggenrola
- Shadow Venipede
- Shadow Karrablast
- Shadow Shelmet
Field Research & Event Bonuses
The Taken Over event will feature several exciting bonuses, including the option to use a Charged TM on Shadow Pokemon to eliminate the move Frustration:
- Team GO Rocket will appear more frequently at PokeStops and in balloons.
- Players can use a Charged TM to help a Shadow Pokemon forget the Charged Attack Frustration.
Additionally, themed Field Research Tasks will offer rewards such as:
- Mysterious Components
- Charged TMs
- Fast TMs
