With the Lunar New Year 2024 event in Pokémon Go, players who were unable to complete the Special Research “A Mythical Discovery” for Mew shiny can easily complete one of the most difficult tasks in the quest.
The very first Special Research in Pokémon Go, titled “A Mythical Discovery”, was introduced in 2019 and allows fans to embark on a long and tedious quest to be rewarded with an encounter with Mew shiny, arguably the most legendary Pokémon most popular.
While most players have completed it, several returning trainers are stuck in what is perhaps the most difficult task of the quest, evolving a Magikarp into a Gyarados by collecting as many as 400 Candies!
6 years to complete an almost endless quest in Pokémon Go
But what would have taken years to accomplish, can now be done in a day during the 2024 Lunar New Year event, as a Reddit user named “visual_hazard”pointed out in a post titled: “POV: You’re a returning player who never completed the ‘A Mythical Discovery’ Special Research and thought the ‘Evolve a Magikarp’ task was going to take another 2 years.»

Many players returning to Pokémon Go were relieved to get this task off their list, as one trainer commented: “I waited SO long but I was able to evolve a Magikarp the other day and I finally got my Mew!»
One player wrote: “With this dragon event, I was able to get all the candies I needed in 1 hour using Nanana Berries, so I’m very grateful to no longer have to spend months walking around with them a Magikarp!» specifying how quickly it was able to evolve the popular Gen 1 Pokémon.
Users insisted, “NANANA ON EVERYONE,” as these Berries give you twice as many Candies with each capture, helping you collect 400 Candies quickly.
To this, another added: “Been back for two days. I haven’t played in six years. Finished Gyarados in like 90 minutes lol.»
Magikarp may be a weak Pokémon but its Gyarados evolution is extremely powerful. Since getting a Gyarados requires a lot of effort and the event lasts until February 11, 2024, many fans are holding onto the evolution for a special reason.
“I really want a shiny now and I’m waiting for it,” one trainer mentioned before another added, “This event gives me hope, and I hope maybe I can get a shiny (I always wanted one).»
It should be noted that Magikarp was the first shiny introduced in Pokémon Go, and its golden color is a huge success among the community.
