The holiday season serves as a significant occasion for Pokémon Go players, as it not only encompasses celebrations like Christmas and New Year but also marks the concluding chapter of the year. Players often anticipate exciting events that elevate the festive atmosphere.
Traditionally, December events reflect the Winter season, showcasing Pokémon that embody this chilly period—typically featuring Ice, Water, and even Normal or Fairy types. However, the latest developments in the game seem to reveal a shift in focus.
Christmas or Halloween: A Festive Dilemma
This year, Niantic has opted to spotlight Dark and Ghost-type Pokémon during the Holiday Part 2 event, leading to confusion among the player community regarding the absence of the expected Ice-type Pokémon. Creatures like Murkrow, Alolan Zigzagoon, and Banette dominate the spawning roster, sparking conversations about the event’s alignment with its holiday theme.

In a humorous twist, a Reddit user shared an observation of their surroundings during a walk, highlighting that the spawned Pokémon leaned more towards Halloween rather than Christmas. The user noted being surrounded by Koffing, Murkrow, and Alolan Zigzagoon, questioning the absence of more festive Pokémon on Christmas Eve.
The player quipped, “Did I somehow make it on the naughty list and only getting these kinds of spawns?” Such sentiments resonated, as others chimed in, likening the event’s holiday spirit to the unrelatedness of “The Sound of Music”as a Christmas film.
While some found humor in the situation, others expressed frustration. One user suggested a more festive lineup, advocating for an influx of Ice-type Pokémon and creative additions like Sudowoodo, Cryogonal, and Delibird. They lamented, “Make many Swinub spawn and increase shiny odds,”signaling a desire for a more seasonally appropriate experience.
Another player echoed this thought, saying, “Barely any Ice types and barely any Christmas costumes is extremely lame for a Christmas event. I do like the background stuff, but the spawns suck.”
In contrast, Holiday Part 1 successfully captured the essence of the festive season by including a joyful array of Pokémon, such as costumed Dedenne, Bergmite, and Snover. While the current event has introduced a higher number of Dark and Ghost-types than usual, it also includes a few celebratory Pokémon, like Alolan Vulpix, Galarian Darumaka, and Cetoddle, offering a partial nod to the holiday spirit.
