Pokémon Go players have called out developers for the lack of consistency regarding the rules for evolving Pokémon during special events.
Pokémon Go players are some of the most dedicated fans in the video game space. The community often shares their feedback online, which developer Niantic pays close attention to when it comes to updating the game and introducing new content for players to dive into.
The latest in-game issue to emerge among fans concerns the evolution process of special event Pokémon finds. Most notably regarding the evolution of the starter Pokémon they can capture during these events.
When Pokémon Go holds in-game celebrations, fans get the chance to capture specially designed Pokémon. These rare skins can come in the form of a cute hat, glasses, and more. However, fans have shared on Reddit a major problem they’ve noticed when trying to evolve these rare Pokémon finds.

One Redditor posted, “Bulbasaur with a hat can’t evolve while the other two starters can. I can’t believe this was intentional.»
Other Pokémon Go players reacted to the post on Reddit, similarly frustrated by the game’s lack of consistency in this regard.
“Damn, and I was hoping. I didn’t even realize that, why the hell don’t they allow some to evolve and not others?» A Pokémon Go fan commented.
Another added, “Imagine telling people to keep a Pokémon for years before they can evolve it, lol.”»
However, some fans are imploring others to be patient and that the developers will likely update the game to allow these Pokémon to evolve at some point in the future.
“Wait a few years. Squirtle and Charmander also couldn’t evolve for the first few years. I had hundreds of each and had to keep them for a few years before I could evolve them.»
At the time of writing, Niantic has yet to reveal whether players will be able to evolve this rare version of Bulbasaur in the future. We’ll be sure to keep you informed if they do, though.
